Akuvox vs 2N vs Aiphone — Which Apartment Intercom Should Your Building Buy?
Three brands dominate Australian apartment intercom: Akuvox, 2N, and Aiphone. Each has a legitimate place. None is universally best. This guide walks through how each compares for body corporate decision-making — features, pricing, lifecycle, and which buildings each suits.
The three contenders
Akuvox
Chinese-engineered, strong value-tier IP intercom brand. The R20A and R20A-2 series are common for 2-wire retrofits; X912S is the premium stainless model; S563 is the Android-based indoor monitor. Akuvox SmartPlus is their resident smartphone app. Strong app integration, competitive per-unit pricing, active firmware updates.
2N
Czech-engineered, premium IP intercom brand owned by Axis Communications (a major Swedish security company). 2N IP Verso is their flagship modular front entrance station; 2N IP Style is the touchscreen flagship; 2N MyMobile is the resident app. Build quality is exceptional, BMS/lift integration via REST API is best-in-class, and they’re frequently specified in tender-driven new builds.
Aiphone
Japanese-engineered, the most-installed apartment intercom brand in Australia. The IX Series is their modern IP platform — IX-DV door stations, IX-MV7-HW indoor master stations, IX Mobile for smartphone access. Conservative engineering, premium reliability, deep installer network, familiar to most strata managers.

When to choose Akuvox
- You’re retrofitting a building with existing 2-wire risers and want to avoid re-cabling.
- Your committee budget is tight and you want strong app integration without premium pricing.
- You want a modern IP platform but the building doesn’t need deep BMS or lift integration.
- You’re comfortable with a brand that’s growing in Australia rather than the most-installed.
When to choose 2N
- You’re building new and want best-in-class engineering with 10+ year lifecycle support.
- You need deep BMS, lift, or CCTV integration via REST API.
- The building is premium-tier and the per-unit cost difference is justified by the finish and reliability.
- The project is tender-driven and 2N is specified by the architect or developer.
When to choose Aiphone
- Your existing building is on Aiphone and you want a like-for-like upgrade with familiar parts.
- Your committee is conservative and prefers Australia’s most-installed brand.
- Your strata manager has standardised the portfolio on Aiphone.
- You want a brand widely understood by every Brisbane and Gold Coast installer.
What about Doorbird, Comelit, Hikvision?
These brands are legitimate options for specific scenarios:
- Doorbird — German design-led brand, best for boutique apartment buildings (under 30 units), townhouse developments, and design-led projects. Premium aesthetics.
- Comelit — Italian brand with strong heritage in apartment intercom. Commonly seen on older Australian apartment buildings. Modern Comelit IP series is competitive.
- Hikvision — Chinese-engineered, often bundled with Hikvision CCTV. Strong cost-efficiency for buildings already using Hikvision security. Not specifically apartment-optimised.
The committee decision framework
For most Brisbane and Gold Coast body corporate buildings, the brand decision comes down to three questions:
- What’s the budget cap per unit? Under $1,000 = Akuvox almost certainly. $1,200+ = 2N or Aiphone realistic.
- What’s the existing wiring? 2-wire retained = Akuvox R20A-2 or Aiphone GT Series. New IP cabling = any brand.
- How specialist is the building? Standard mid-rise = any brand works. Premium tower with lift integration = 2N has the integration depth.
Why we standardised on Akuvox
We evaluated Akuvox, 2N, and Aiphone at scale before standardising on Akuvox for our build. Four factors won the decision: best 2-wire IP retrofit (R20A-2 series re-uses existing risers, dramatically reducing install cost), production-grade SmartPlus app, $200-400/unit cheaper at equivalent feature level, and stronger per-job economics that let us offer better SLA terms in maintenance contracts. We hold Akuvox Specialist Installer status with full installer certification depth.
If your building genuinely needs 2N or Aiphone (often the case in tender-driven new builds with specific product specifications), we’ll refer you to a specialist installer for that brand. Our objective is the right outcome for your building — not signing every job. For most body corporate replacements across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Akuvox is the right answer.
