Best apartment intercom in Australia 2026 — honest buyer ranking

Last updated June 2026. First-party ranking based on 15+ years of Brisbane and Gold Coast apartment-building installs by Jarrod Edwards (owner of Mr Secured Pty Ltd, trading as Intercom Solutions). We install Akuvox as the primary brand — this ranking explains why, and where the other brands fit.

TL;DR — the honest ranking

  1. Akuvox — best app, best per-unit cost, best body-corporate fit for most Australian apartment buildings. 9.5/10
  2. 2N — Czech-engineered premium; same SIP architecture as Akuvox; ~25% more expensive 5-year TCO; My2N Cloud is solid. 9/10
  3. Aiphone — Japanese legacy premium; IXG series is excellent IP intercom; price points often fail body corporate AGM approval. 8/10
  4. Comelit — heritage Italian; common in 1990s-2000s Brisbane installs; smartphone app stack lags materially. 6/10
  5. Doorbird — single-family-home product; multi-family cloud admin lacks strata manager depth. 5/10 (wrong category)
  6. Hikvision / Dahua intercoms — NDAA / supply-chain concerns; we do not install for apartment buildings. Not recommended

#1 — Akuvox (our primary recommendation)

Why Akuvox wins for most Australian apartment buildings

Akuvox started smartphone-first. The SmartPlus app and the IT82 indoor monitor were designed together, so the resident experience is consistent across both surfaces. The R29S entrance panel is vandal-resistant, the X912 concierge station handles premium installs, and SmartPlus Cloud gives strata managers proper tenant-turnover admin. 3-year hardware warranty. Standard 40-unit install lands at $700 per unit over 5 years including the cloud subscription — the price point that consistently clears body corporate AGMs.

When Akuvox is the right answer

#2 — 2N (premium-tier alternative)

Why 2N ranks second

2N is Czech-engineered (Axis Communications subsidiary). Verso 2.0 modular panel with field-replaceable button/keypad/RFID/camera modules. IP Force for vandal-resistant entrances. Premium-tier hardware with similar app maturity to Akuvox. The honest catch: ~$900 per unit over 5 years vs Akuvox’s $700 — about 25% more expensive without proportionate functional gain for most Australian apartment buildings.

When 2N wins

#3 — Aiphone (legacy premium)

Why Aiphone ranks third

Aiphone is Japanese-engineered with decades-deep apartment-building install base in Australia. The IXG series (multi-tenant IP intercom) is genuinely excellent hardware. The catch: price points often $1,000+ per unit over 5 years — consistently fails body corporate AGM approval rounds. Aiphone heritage (GT-2H, JO-1) systems are still common in Brisbane buildings but parts are increasingly end-of-life.

When Aiphone wins

#4 — Comelit (heritage Italian)

Common in Brisbane apartment buildings built between 1990-2010. Hardware quality is good, but the smartphone app stack lags Akuvox and 2N materially. We see Comelit during retrofit assessments — typically recommend modernisation to Akuvox unless the body corporate wants to delay capex.

#5 — Doorbird (wrong category for body corporate)

Doorbird is a single-family-home product. Their multi-family product exists but lacks the cloud admin depth strata managers need for tenant turnover, credential expiry, and per-unit reporting. For a body corporate of 30+ units, Akuvox or 2N is the right answer.

#6 — Hikvision / Dahua intercoms (not recommended for apartment buildings)

NDAA Section 889 supply-chain concerns apply to apartment-building intercom hardware just as they apply to CCTV. Australian Signals Directorate has flagged broader concerns. For apartment buildings managing personal data (resident phone numbers, gate-unlock audit logs, video call history), we install Akuvox (ISO 27001 audited) instead. How our ranking differs from review-aggregator content

Most “best apartment intercom” content online is affiliate-driven. Our ranking is built from 15+ years of Brisbane and Gold Coast install experience under one QLD Class 2 Security Provider Licence (#4546326). We are an authorised Akuvox installer (manufacturer-warranty status), so the #1 ranking reflects commercial alignment — but we also detail when 2N or Aiphone is the right choice for specific buildings. The ranking is editorial, not paid placement.
